“Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again.” Joseph Campbell
Do you have a place that you would consider to be your sacred space where you can go to recharge your body, mind and spirit?
Over the last few years, I have written a lot about self care, self love, healing through the holistic aspects and much more. We work on ourselves best in places where we feel safe and can be uninterrupted, and having a room, space, or area in or outside our homes that can support our holistic needs is important. In fact, I can't overstate the importance of sacred space. Over the years, I have emphasized it in my events, and added an entire section about it in my practitioner training manuals, because I have felt that it has been understated in most holistic trainings. As empaths, as healers, as wayshowers and guides for others, it's essential that we have ways to reconnect and recharge our energy.
Sacred space provides a safe haven where we can let go of the stresses and distractions of everyday life.
It allows us to tap into our spiritual essence and connect with higher energies.
It provides a sanctuary where we can reconnect with our inner selves, invite healing energies, and deepen our spiritual practices.
Creating a sacred space can be a deeply personal and transformative experience. Intention is the driving force behind all spiritual practices, and creating sacred space is no exception. When we set a clear intention, we align our energies with the divine forces at work, invoking a higher power to assist us in our journey of healing and self-discovery. This intention becomes the foundation upon which the sacred space is built –a powerful anchor that guides and supports us throughout our spiritual endeavors.
To harness the power of intention, it is essential to first clarify our purpose for creating sacred space. Are we seeking physical healing, emotional release, or spiritual guidance? By clearly defining our intentions, we can direct the energy in a focused manner, allowing for a deeper connection with the divine.
Once the intention is set, it is crucial to infuse it into every aspect of your space. From the choice of colors and symbols to the placement of sacred objects, every element should be carefully selected to align with the desired outcome. For example, if the intention is to cultivate peace and tranquility, soft colors and serene imagery can be incorporated to create a soothing atmosphere. If the intention is to feel rejuevenated, bright colors and more active imagery may be used. (I personally change my sacred space to suit my mood, the season, the moon phase, with different intentions, etc.)
It is important to remember that the role of our intention extends beyond the physical realm. Through mindful presence and visualization, we can breathe life into our intentions, amplifying their power. By envisioning our desired outcome and holding it in our hearts, we invite the divine energy to manifest and flow through the sacred space, creating a profoundly positive energetic shift.
In essence, intention acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual dimensions, allowing us to tap into the limitless potential of sacred space. It is the conscious choice to invite the divine presence into our lives, and it empowers us to become active participants in our own healing and transformation.
"Sacred space is an absolute necessity for anybody today. You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don’t know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don’t know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody, you don’t know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation.” Joseph Campbell
Aligning with the "Let it Go" Energy of Autumn
If you are someone with a busy life and a not-so-clutter-free home, it’s important to understand that clutter, both physical and mental, can have a profound impact on our well-being and energy levels. When our physical space is cluttered, it becomes difficult to focus and find peace within ourselves. Our minds become overwhelmed, and it becomes challenging to access the deep spiritual energy that resides within us.
To begin the process of clearing clutter and organizing, it is essential to first recognize the areas in our lives that need attention. Take a moment to reflect on your physical surroundings –are there piles of papers, clothes, or personal belongings that no longer serve a purpose? Are there objects that carry negative energy or memories? Identify these areas and commit to clearing them out.
Once you have identified the clutter, it is time to take action. Begin by decluttering one area at a time, focusing on the energy and intention behind each item. Take a moment to ask yourself, "Does this object bring me joy and serve a purpose in my spiritual journey?" If the answer is no, consider donating, recycling, or discarding it.
I just want to say that for me personally this is often easier said than done. I know this to be true, especially if you don't connect directly with what "joy" means in your life. After all, joy is subjective. You'll need to find your own way when it comes to balancing your material possessions with practicality and comfort. Having a sense of calm and groundedness in your living areas is worth doing a little self-inquiry and discovering what is best for you.
As you clear away the physical clutter, you will begin to notice a shift in your energy. The space around you will feel lighter and more open, allowing for positive energy to flow freely. Take this opportunity to rearrange and organize your remaining belongings in a way that supports your spiritual practice. Create designated spaces for meditation, prayer, or energy work, and surround yourself with objects and symbols that bring you peace and inspiration.
If you find your peaceful sacred space is slowly being inundated with stuff again, as it so happens to many of us, it is good to regularly assess your surroundings and let go of anything that no longer serves your spiritual journey. Embrace the transformative power of decluttering and organizing, and watch as your sacred space becomes a sanctuary for healing and spiritual growth.
Sacred Space Maintenance: Cleansing and Purifying the Space
One of the most effective ways to cleanse and purify a space is through the use of smudging. Smudging involves burning sacred plants, such as sage, cedar, or palo santo, and allowing the smoke to waft throughout the room. This ancient practice has been used by indigenous cultures for centuries to clear away negative energies and invite positive vibrations. As you smudge, visualize the smoke carrying away any unwanted energy, leaving behind a purified and sacred space.
Scientific studies conducted in 2015, 2016, 2020, and 2022 have observed that sage smoke* improves mood and reduce stress. A 2014 study also found that specifically white prairie sage was used as a traditional remedy for treating anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. Sage smoke can cleanse the air of up to 94% of airborne bacteria as well as disinfect the air.
(* If you or your loved ones are eplileptic, you should avoid using sage. The natural chemical thujone can trigger seizures in epileptics.)
Another powerful technique is sound cleansing, which involves using various instruments, such as bells, singing bowls, or chimes, to create harmonious vibrations that clear and uplift the energy of the space. The resonant tones produced by these instruments can disperse stagnant energy and promote a sense of peace and tranquility.
In addition to smudging and sound cleansing, you can also incorporate other cleansing rituals, such as spritzing saltwater around the room or using crystals with purifying properties, like clear quartz or selenite. These methods work together to cleanse, purify, and protect your sacred space. Specific crystals and stones can also be used to anchor and amplify the energy in your sacred space. Each crystal carries its own unique properties, so choose ones that resonate with your intentions. You can also incorporate natural materials like wood or clay for a grounding effect.
Remember, cleansing and purifying the space is not a one-time event but an ongoing practice. Just like cleaning your home, cleansing the energy in the space is part of energy housekeeping. You already know how cleaning your home creates wonderful energy throughout, the same goes with regularly energy cleansing your spaces to maintain a high vibrational environment. By nurturing and honoring your sacred space, you are honoring yourself and the work you are doing in your sacred space. You are ultimately creating a sanctuary where your spirit can awaken, thrive, and connect with the divine.
